Lakeland Conference Status UpdateWe asked Buchanan Athletic Director Fred Smith severals questions via emails. How did your (Lakeland Conference) meetings with the St Joe Valley and Red Arrow go, just scheduling for now or any talk of merging in some form? Since neither conferences are a perfect fit for all sports either because of geography or competitiveness, we are scheduling where convenient yet remaining as 3 separate conferences. Any hopes of adding any new members to the Lakeland or are schools satisfied with current set-up? Any thoughts of adding new members, is Buchanan looking for a new athletic home? Easier said than done. The Lakeland Conference is open to additional membership and Buchanan High School is open to a new home. However, with current league set-ups and current enrollment figures, I do not see any changes on the horizon. I do not think anyone is satisfied with the current set-up, but it is what it is without any solutions. updated 8-15-11 from Buchanan AD, Fred Smith At this time we are moving forward as a four team conference and having scheduling meetings with the St. Joe Valley and Red Arrow Conferences.

CLICK HERE - Wolverine Conference extends official invites to Berrien Springs and Coloma6-2-11 - On Tuesday, the Wolverine Conference Board of Governors voted to extend an official invitation to Berrien Springs and Coloma to join the league. Pending their administrative and Board of Education approval, they will begin league competition in the 2012-13 school year. Berrien Springs and Coloma will increase the size of the Wolverine Conference to twelve teams joining Edwardsburg which was added as the tenth school in April replacing Gull Lake. The Board of Governors is very excited to add these two schools to the league. We know that they have quality programs and will be a nice fit with the existing schools. Their philosophy of the role of educational athletics is in line with the conference and they have similar athletic offerings as the current league schools. The Board has been reviewing a wide range of options over the past year from maintaining the size of the league at ten schools to expanding to as many as twenty schools. After the addition of Edwardsburg, discussions continued and it was decided that expanding to twelve schools would further enhance the opportunities that we could provide our student-athletes and school districts. We are looking forward to beginning the process of developing league formats and schedules. For the 2011-12 school year, Wolverine Conference members include Allegan, Comstock, Dowagiac, Otsego, Paw Paw, Plainwell, South Haven, Three Rivers and Vicksburg. Next year, Gull Lake will continue to play in the Wolverine in football only. The league, formed in 1952, has predominantly been an eight-school league until the addition of Dowagiac and Paw in 2006. Charter members of the league were Allegan, Otsego, Plainwell, Portage, South Haven and Western State High (Kalamazoo) updated 6-4-11

Wolverine Conference Invites Edwardsburg To JoinYesterday, the Wolverine Conference Board of Governors voted to extend an official invitation to Edwardsburg to join the league. Pending the Edwardsburg Board of Education approval, the Eddies will begin league competition in the 2012-13 school year. Edwardsburg will become the tenth member of the Wolverine Conference replacing Gull Lake which will join the SMAC (Big 16) next year. The Board of Governors is very excited to add Edwardsburg to the league and looks forward to beginning the relationship with them. We know that they have a quality program and will be a nice fit with the existing nine schools. Their philosophy of the role of educational athletics is in line with the conference and they have similar athletic offerings as the current league schools. Before making the decision yesterday, members of the league considered a wide range of options, including expansion. League representatives visited three other schools and found that they too had a great deal to offer the conference. After extensive discussion the Board decided that the best course of action at this time would be to remain at ten schools and to offer Edwardsburg the opportunity to fill the existing opening. Wolverine Conference members include Allegan, Comstock, Dowagiac, Otsego, Paw Paw, Plainwell, South Haven, Three Rivers and Vicksburg. The league, formed in 1952, was predominantly an eight-school league until the addition of Dowagiac and Paw in 2006. WOLVERINE CONFERENCE Expansion UpdateReply From Edwardsburgbelow is a reply to THE SENIOR REPORTS -Edwardsburg Public Schools is scheduled for a visit from the Wolverine Conference representatives on March 29, 2011. It’s my understanding that the Wolverine Conference has selected four Class B schools for visits: Coloma, Edwardsburg, Berrien Springs and Buchanan. They will reportedly extend invitations to three (3) of the four (4). Notification will be later April or first of May!
Thanks, Sherman L. Ostrander Superintendent of Schools Edwardsburg Public Schoolsupdated 3-11-11
On Wednesday (3-9-11), the Wolverine Conference Board of Governors met at Paw Paw High School for its regularly scheduled meeting. The main topic on the agenda was the status of the Wolverine Conference and possible future plans. Next year, the league will be made up of nine schools with the withdrawal of Gull Lake, except in football. No decisions were made on the size of the league, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, pending visits to schools that indicated an interest in becoming a part of the Wolverine. Visitations will be scheduled for later this month with officials from Berrien Springs, Buchanan, Coloma and Edwardsburg, all Class B schools currently in the Lakeland Conference. A visitation committee, consisting of two principals and two athletic directors, will report back to the Board of Governors on their observations at a meeting to be held in April after spring break. The Wolverine Conference, which was organized in 1952, currently consists of ten Class B schools: Allegan, Comstock, Dowagiac, Gull Lake, Otsego, Paw Paw, Plainwell, South Haven, Three Rivers and Vicksburg.

With a unanimous vote the Board agreed to release Gull Lake from their league contracts in all sports except football for the 2011-12 school year. Both the Wolverine Conference and Gull Lake agreed that it would be in the best interest of all conference schools, as well as their student athletes, to maintain the football schedules for one more year due to the difficulty of finding replacements at this point. The SMAC had voted to accept Gull Lake into the league in all sports except for football since their conference had existing contracts with Jackson Lumen Christi. Gull Lake has been a member of the Wolverine Conference since the 1974-75 school year, becoming the ninth member of the league at that time. The conference, which was formed in 1952-53, was set up as a league for schools with a Class B or lower enrollment. According to the league’s constitution, when a school exceeds that level for two years, it would be ineligible to continue with the league unless action was taken to allow that school to continue. This fall Gull Lake reached that threshold and decided to look at opportunities in the SMAC. In December, 2010, the Wolverine Conference Board of Governors made a decision to look at league expansion which would go into effect in the 2012-13 school year. The Conference is continuing down that path and, in addition, looking for a replacement for Gull Lake. This week, letters will be sent to area schools to determine their interest. From that response, the number of schools to be included in the league and format for future competition will be established. The Wolverine Conference athletic directors are excited about the new opportunities that league expansion offers. Gull Lake, which has been a valuable member of the league over the past 36 years contributing a great deal to the competition offered member schools, will definitely be missed. The SMAC will be adding a quality program to their league. updated 1-18-11
Lakeland ConferenceThe Senior Reports sent email to administrators at Lakeland Conference schools asking their thoughts on schools possibly moving to the Wolverine Conference.
Buchanan(1-18-11) - Buchanan continues to enjoy the relationship with all Lakeland schools, both on a competitive nature and on a relationship nature. If it is time for schools to join other leagues, then Buchanan will evaluate all of its options. Until schools formally make a move, everything is speculative.Fred Smith, Athletic Director, Buchanan Community Schools
