"MAD RUSH" To D2 May Be DoneIndicators lead us to believe that the "MAD RUSH" for NAIA schools to join D2 may be coming to a halt after this June membership period.Reasons why we see schools taking a "second look" at the move. 1- Economic conditions have not improved as fast as some would have liked to have seen, this includes the recent price jump in gas and transportation cost. 2- Concerns of schools in finding a D2 conference that will meet their athletic needs or just finding a conference to sponsor them. There are concerns about how many conferences that D2 will allowed to be certified in the future. At this point in time no limit has been voted on, but the issue has been discussed among current members. The potential loss of post-season play due to not finding a conference home after being accepted. 3- Concerns of future membership requirements that might add additional burdens to the athletic budget. Over the past several years the application continues to grow with more requirements of new members. 4- Schools are concerned about the length of time it will take to be approved for membership, this is due to the NCAA having a limit of 8 new members being accepted per year. Schools also are not willing to possibly be denied membership and hope to avoid the bad PR and embarrassment related to this. 5- Research shows that some consultants are not hearing from as many NAIA schools on studies to be completed as in the past. Plus, schools who have done studies and decided to pass up this years process. 6- Schools have concerns about adding additional full-time staff during this economy. Staffing requirements are costing more then earlier expected. 7- Schools have had enough time to consider the recent "rush" to switch from the NAIA and NCAA and have decided it is best to not move forward at this time. D2 helped with this process by limiting the number of schools it has added each year. Also schools are talking with other schools who are currently going through the process and seeing the time and effort it takes to make the move. This July we will see how the process has changed and the effect it will have on the future D2 membership process.

The "New" American Mideast ConferenceFisher, who decided to stay NAIA after the SUnshine Conference dissolved, was represented at the May AMC AD's meeting and the June AMC Presidents' meeting. They are committed to the NAIA for as long as possible. There will be eight (8) AMC members in 2011-12 - Carlow, Daemen, Fisher, Houghton, Point Park, Roberts Wesleyan, Wilberforce, and Walsh.
Walsh is not a typo. They are in the league to get a schedule for all their teams, Players of the Week, all-conference honors, etc. Of course, they aren't eligible for AMC post-season and none of their conference individual award winners can be submitted to the NAIA. There is precedent for this in the AMC. We did the same for Ohio Dominican and Seton Hill when they were in the process of leaving. Daemen and Roberts applied to NCAA II. Houghton is doing exploratory for NCAA III. The presidents have not written off 2012-13 - yet.

NAIA conferences are highly involved throughout the evaluation process to ensure a good fit for prospective institutions at both the conference and national levels. “The NAIA is proud to welcome these new members into the company of great institutions in the NAIA,” said Lori Thomas, NAIA Senior Vice President for Membership and Character Initiatives. “During convention we’ve had good discussions focused on the core of the NAIA and what it looks like moving forward. I am confident that these new partnerships will bring great value to not only our new institutions but also their student-athletes.” The Association provides exclusive athletic and scholarship opportunities for over 60,000 student-athletes at nearly 300 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. The Association, founded in 1937, has earned a reputation as strong off the field as on it. At NAIA campuses, student-athletes form close-knit bounds and lifelong friendships with peers, coaches and faculty. NAIA member colleges and universities help students mature and develop on all levels – through programs that help prepare them not only for competition and graduation, but also leadership roles after college. PacWest Commissioner Respondsupdated 11-17-10below is a response to The Senior Reports from Bob Hogue the PacWest Commissioner on the recent position paper by Westmont College. "The Pacific West Conference is encouraged to hear that so many quality institutions in the west region are considering the merits of application to NCAA Division II and our conference, in particular. The PacWest is proud of its affiliation with the NCAA, and we embrace our conference's unique geographic, cultural and institutional diversity, athletic excellence, and outstanding academic achievement. Over the years, the PacWest has won numerous national championships at the NCAA Division II level. In the last year alone, the PacWest celebrated another National Champion, an NCAA National Runner-Up, an NCAA National Semifinalist, two NCAA Regional Finalists, and scores of student-athletes who regularly showcase their talents on the field and in the classroom as part of the Division II Life in the Balance program. Our community spirit and academic excellence shines in diverse communities and universities from St. George, Utah and Phoenix, Arizona to San Rafael, Belmont and San Francisco in California, to Hilo, Laie and Honolulu in Hawai‘i. In 2011-12, the PacWest will welcome California Baptist University from Riverside, California to make us an even stronger conference that boasts 10 schools. Its easy to see why we say - From the lovely islands of Hawai'i, to the exquisite shores of San Francisco Bay, to the enchanting deserts, mountains and valleys in Arizona, Utah and Southern California, the PacWest is proud to be the most beautiful destination conference in the entire NCAA - and prouder yet of the great achievements by our members and the awesome experience for our student-athletes!"

Mid-Central College Conferenceupdated 11-10-10
Mount Vernon Nazarene University Approved to Join Mid-Central College ConferenceThe Mid-Central College Conference (MCC) Council of Presidents (COP) and Commissioner J.D. Collins announced today the acceptance of Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) as the newest member of the MCC. MVNU had its application approved to begin competing in the MCC during the 2011-12 academic year.“We are pleased to announce that Mount Vernon Nazarene University will be joining the Mid-Central College Conference,” said COP Chair and Huntington University President Dr. G. Blair Dowden. “MVNU has a rich athletic tradition and will be a strong addition to our conference. Their educational and athletic philosophy and their faith tradition complement well our current membership. We look forward to their joining us as strong athletic partners and worthy opponents.” When MVNU officially joins the conference on July 1, 2011, it will become the tenth member of the MCC. Founded in 1968 and located in Mount Vernon, Ohio, MVNU is a Christian liberal arts university sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene with a current enrollment of approximately 1,400 undergraduate students. With 58 bachelor’s degree programs and seven master’s programs, MVNU is an academic-focused university accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. During the 2009-10 academic year, eight out of ten MVNU intercollegiate athletic teams earned a team grade point average of 3.0 or above and an overall student-athlete GPA of 3.16. As a member of the NAIA since 1975, MVNU has a rich tradition of athletic success while competing in the American Mideast Conference, which was previously known as the Mid-Ohio Conference. Ten athletic teams currently compete for MVNU, but university administration has committed to initiate four more teams to reach the full number of 14 MCC sponsored sports by 2015. "We are extremely excited about the opportunity to join the Mid-Central College Conference,” MVNU President Dr. Daniel Martin said following the COP announcement. “The MCC is a group of faith-based institutions with similar beliefs as ours, who strive for excellence in all that they do. Joining the MCC will give our student-athletes the opportunity to face quality competition while also placing a strong emphasis on the character development and Christian fellowship of interacting with student-athletes from other faith-based institutions. This is a positive step forward in the continuing growth of Cougar sports." The road to becoming the newest member of the MCC began for MVNU in January, 2010, with an initial inquiry to MCC Commissioner J.D. Collins. On August 16, the COP moved to allow for application by MVNU, which was submitted on October 13. Admission to the conference was confirmed when the MCC COP unanimously approved MVNU’s application. “This is a landmark day for the Mid-Central College Conference,” Collins said. “We have processed this addition for 11 months, acquiring input from MCC coaches, athletic directors and presidents. MVNU embodies the characteristics of the NAIA Champions of Character Program, and brings both strong academics and athletic programs into the conference. All of these attributes will continue to allow the MCC to establish itself as one of the best NAIA conferences in the nation.” updated 11-9-10

This is a step in the right direction of legitimizing our association in the eyes and minds of national organizations that can influence our future. I found Jim Carr, NAIA President and CEO, to be very cooperative, and open to establishing further cooperative efforts in the future.

This decision effectively speeds up the timeframe recently established with the applications from current DAC members Black Hills State University and the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology being formally accepted to candidacy by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). With BHSU and SDSM&T moving forward with their NCAA application, the five-school schedule would have ordinarily been implemented on July 1, 2012; yesterday's decision essentially serves to move up the scheduling change by one year.Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University and the current president of the DAC Board of Directors commented, "This is a time of transition for the DAC. The NAIA is a strong association with nearly 300 member colleges and universities, and the five institutions have declared their commitment to the NAIA and look forward to beginning the new schedule. We wish BHSU and SDSM&T well in their future paths, but are also excited to explore a new direction with new possibilities as we focus on the terrific competition and long-term, historic rivalries among our five member schools." The DAC and its member institutions are affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Dakota State University (SD), Dickinson State University, Jamestown College, Mayville State University, and Valley City State University are the five member institutions who will begin with the new scheduling effective in fall 2011. Coaches and athletic directors will begin the process of planning for the schedules under the new format immediately. posted 8-6-10

Kiki Baker Barnes, Dillard University - Athletic Director added 9-30-09 This a tremendous loss for the GCAC. I personally understand why they chose the SSAC. Several of those schools were charter members of GCAC like my school, Tougaloo College,MS. We spent a lot of time, human resourses along with finances putting the GCAC together. I knew this time was coming, but I did not really think it was this close. We were invited to SSAC for membership. Due to the number of Sports being offered,Tougaloo College finacially could not add seven more sports to its athletics program. The GCAC will meet in N.O.LA, Oct.5th and 6th. I do not know the future of GCAC. Hopefully, we can add more schools to fill that void left by former Conference members.I have made contact with several schools. Dr James C. Start of the Year REMINDERAsk all conference members to declare their intentions on remaining a member of the conference at the start of each school year. Each conference member should be encouraged to tell the conference commissioner or president when they are talking with another conference, this as a courtesy for everyone. It is not uncommon for schools to be in full-fledged talks before the conference is notified, it should be a priority to notify your conference before that happens. This will help to avoid issues for everyone.
