Statement from Laura Courtley-Todd Director of Athletics St. Thomas UniversityWe stopped out of the process because we did not have a viable conference option at the time. A conference affiliation was a big deal to us due to our southern location in Florida, and being an independent was not the best option for the “balance” of a student-athlete. We enjoyed the experience of the NCAA DII process and have hopes again one day to re-enter with a solid conference affiliation.updated 2-15-10 We again have an email into the officials at St. Thomas about this issue. We had an earlier reply from October saying the school was still waiting to release that information. There seemed to be some confusion from school officials about the information below concerning D2 status statement. According to several sources St. Thomas was concerned about not being able to find a D2 conference that would accept them. They wanted to delay the D2 process until that was settled, instead the D2 released them from provisonal status. Should St. Thomas decide to move forward with D2 they would have to re-apply and go through the same process as any new school looking to move in that direction. We hope to have information shortly on this issue. updated 10-2-09
St. Thomas University Withdraws From NCAA D2 Membership ProcessThe NCAA sent a letter to St. Thomas (Fla) University yesterday indicating that the membership committee has agreed, per St. Thomas’ request, to remove them from the DII membership process. Should they want back into the D2 membership process they will have to apply all over again, be accepted again and start from the beginning of the process.St. Thomas is currently a member of the NAIA's Sun Conference. The Senior Reports is waiting for a statement from St. Thomas and will post when we receive it.

We have sources who say that Marygrove and Rochester are candidates. Also, would you consider adding Lourdes? The below is his email reply to us - The WHAC as a conference is always open to accepting new members that are a good "fit" for us academically and athletically. I will confirn that we have had conversations with both Marygrove and Rochester College and received letters from both of their respective presidents expressing their interest in being considered for WHAC membership. We are doing our due dilligence with regard to finding out more about what these institutions can bring ot the WHAC and at the same time sharing with them the potential benefits of being affiliated with our conference and the schools who are already WHAC members. I have also had informal conversations with representatives of Lourdes College regarding membership in the NAIA and the WHAC. With the recent addition of University of Northwest Ohio for 2010-2011, WHAC membership now stands at nine institutions, which creates some scheduling challenges. Returning to an even number and possibly twelve schools, in order to attain two automatic qualifying beths to nationals does have some appeal and advantages for us, if we find schools that are the right fit for us. We are not interested in bringing in schools that will not contribute to the reputation and quality of our conference. Thanks to Commissioner Jugan for his answers to our questions. It looks like the WHAC has taken a positive approach to the expansion of their conference, especially with the many changes taking in other conferences.

CLICK HERE - DII presidents stand firm on Balance proposalsportion of above story, click above link to read entire articleIn non-legislative discussion, the presidents began to talk philosophically about a series of enhanced standards for prospective Division II member institutions to meet when they apply to enter the membership process. The Division II Membership Committee has begun to clarify a number of CLICK HERE - “minimum expectations” that prospective schools should meet even before they apply, but the Membership Committee and the Presidents Council believe even more evaluation criteria may be necessary should there be an influx of applicants in the future. Molloy President Drew Bogner, who represents the Council on the Membership Committee, said the philosophy about the membership process has changed in recent years from one of allowing schools to strengthen their weaknesses during the membership process to demanding they be fixed beforehand. “We have seen problems with the former strategy,” he said. “Ideally, the membership process shouldn’t be used to let people in and allow them to work things out along the way.” In addition, there’s more of a demand for Division II membership, he said, now that the division has successfully branded itself as an attractive membership destination. The Membership Committee, in fact, recently approved a policy stipulating that no more than 30 institutions can be in the membership process in a given year. Bogner said it’s possible that limit might be tested in the near future once institutions considering a move become comfortable and proficient in meeting the minimum expectations. That’s why Bogner asked the Presidents Council for additional evaluation criteria to serve as a “tiebreaker” if the pipeline gets too crowded. Other Council members agreed with the approach, comparing it to the admissions process many schools use to deal with an overflow of prospective students. Bogner said he’ll pursue the matter further with the Membership Committee when it meets later this fall, and that the Presidents Council will revisit the additional criteria at a future meeting. posted 10-08-09

UNOH ACCEPTED INTO WOLVERINE-HOOSIER ATHLETIC CONFERENCEThe University of Northwestern Ohio has been granted full membership into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) beginning with the 2010-11 academic year. The announcement was made by the WHAC Council of Presidents following their voting process. “To be accepted into a conference of educational institutions with the quality of academics, facilities and athletics that the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has, the University of Northwestern Ohio is elated to be included,” stated President Dr. Jarvis. “We look forward to being a partner with the other member institutions of the WHAC and the future that we will all build together. “ UNOH, located in Lima, Ohio, resumed athletics in 2007-08 as a four-year program after previously competing at the junior college level. The Racers became full members of the AMC before the 2008-09 season. They will compete in the AMC one final year in 2009-10 before joining the WHAC. "We feel the movement to the WHAC will enhance our ability in becoming a stable, prominent, and forthcoming NAIA institution due to its strong history along with enabling us to maximize our geographical presence in the tri-state area,” stated UNOH athletic director Chris Adams. “We were thrilled when we received the news that the WHAC had accepted our bid.” The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference currently consists of 8 universities. With UNOH joining the WHAC, the league members will total 9 universities. Current members include seven Michigan schools and one in Indiana. New DII Membership Report now available onlineCouncil of Presidents Approve Plan for NAIA Eligibility CenterPlan’s focus: accountability and fair competitionKANSAS CITY, Mo. – In order to emphasize accountability in the certification of student-athletes and fair competition among individuals with similar athletic experiences the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today plans to launch an NAIA Eligibility Center. Beginning in the fall of 2010, students that wish to participate in athletics at a member institution will need to be certified by the NAIA Eligibility Center in order to qualify academically and be cleared as an eligible student-athlete for competition beginning in 2011.“This is an important step forward for the NAIA,” said John Leavens, Senior Vice President for Membership Services. “The Eligibility Center signals our commitment to fair play for NAIA student-athletes and also provides a major boost to those on campus responsible for eligibility.” The concept of a national eligibility center was approved in April by the NAIA membership, responding to longstanding concerns that some NAIA student-athletes were gaining unfair advantages through elite-level training and competition outside the traditional college sports setting. During its September 27-28 meeting, the NAIA Council of Presidents (COP) approved a recommendation of its Executive Committee that the national office be directed to establish a separate legal entity known as the NAIA Eligibility Center, which will review eligibility for all first-time NAIA student-athletes. National certification will promote consistency: determinations of eligibility for a particular student-athlete will be considered binding at all NAIA institutions. Individuals registering with the NAIA Eligibility Center will be charged a one-time fee. Registration fees will be used to offset the center’s operational costs and no additional fees will be imposed on NAIA member institutions. National determination of initial eligibility also opens communication with guidance counselors, students and their families in the nation’s 26,000 secondary schools. “The Eligibility Center represents a major new channel for getting the word out to high school students and their families about the special niche NAIA institutions occupy in higher education, and the opportunities to play college sports and receive athletic scholarships,” Leavens said. National office staff and a subcommittee of the COP is working on the development of the center in partnership with standardized testing agencies and local high schools to establish mechanisms to transfer test scores and obtain transcripts. The NAIA Eligibility Center will be housed at the NAIA national office headquartered in Kansas City, Mo. and will begin registering student-athletes in fall of 2010.

SUNY-ESF Joins National Association for Intercollegiate AthleticsNAIA COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS APPROVE FOUR NEW MEMBERSKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Council of Presidents (COP) met in Kansas City last week and approved membership applications from Benedictine University at Springfield (Ill.), Central Baptist (Ark.) College, Warren Wilson (N.C.) College and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. These institutions bring total NAIA membership to 290.”The NAIA welcomes these four institutions and looks forward to working with campus leaders to advance character-driven intercollegiate athletics,” said John Leavens, NAIA Senior Vice President for Membership Services. “I am confident these new members share in the long-held mission of the NAIA to promote the education and development of well-rounded students and productive citizens through intercollegiate athletics.” NAIA national office staff works closely with member conferences to identify prospective members. NAIA conferences are highly involved throughout the evaluation process to ensure a good fit for prospective institutions at both the conference and national levels. The NAIA will continue to work with each conference to identify prospective schools for NAIA membership. These institutions join an Association that was founded in 1937, and is a leader in the development of student-athletes. The NAIA continues to be a pioneer in implementing exceptional standards for academics, diversity and character. Those standards are evident not only on the campuses of member institutions, but also in the competitive arena. The Association provides exclusive opportunities for more than 45,000 young men and women to achieve academically while competing for the love of the game. NAIA member institutions award millions of dollars through athletic aid to eligible student-athletes and create an environment where competitive athletics, academic excellence and character walk hand-in-hand.

Football and Division II have been discussion topics for years, and they will probably remain just talk for at least another year. “People have been talking about affiliation and additional sports since before I became AD,” said Mark DeMichael, IWU’s second-year athletic director. “I could see that happening at some point with our growth,” DeMichael added. “But there’s been no progress in putting a study together because we’ve had other priorities like putting together a bid to get the NAIA national track championships.” Todd Voss, IWU executive vice president, likely would head any committee that investigates football and Division II. But Voss said Friday he is committed to working on other school projects for the 2009-10 school year and won’t have the time to form a study group. “I would first want to look at the NAIA question,” Voss said. “There has been conversation where the NCAA may add a Division IV and then where would NAIA fall in should that happen. “If we moved up to Division II, we would want to know if it creates opportunities for our school and athletes,” Voss said. DeMichael and Voss said there are many issues to resolve before bringing football or moving up to NCAA II. Foremost would be funding for the football program and construction of a stadium. Other expenses will incur such as additional transportation costs and the hiring of new and additional coaches and athletic personnel. “The bottom line is, not a lot has changed,” Voss said. “We have not started a committee yet, but the conversation has been going on for years.” Voss said Smith’s apparent endorsement for bringing football to IWU is a change from past administrations. “Our past presidents didn’t think (football) was a good investment for the university, and Dr. Smith thinks it would be good for the community,” Voss said. Some interpreted Smith’s comments that football was already coming to IWU and DeMicheal said he spent much of the week addressing the subject. But DeMichael said the president has sent a message that school officials can proceed to the next stage. “What it does is give us a more definitive idea that (a study) will happen at some point,” DeMichael said. “In the past, there’s never been anybody in the cabinet say that we needed to do this; it had been pure talk and speculation. “Now, the president said says we’ll be doing an actual study at some point, and probably in the near future than the far future.” Smith made his comments as part of his overall vision for the university during the next four years.

DII contest reductions sent to presidentsUniversity of Puerto Rico, Cayey WithdrawS From D2(July 9, 2009) The University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, has notified the NCAA that it is withdrawing its membership. The Division II Membership Committee acknowledged the decision at its meeting Thursday in Indianapolis. University Chancellor Ram S. Lamba in a letter to NCAA President Myles Brand cited financial concerns and travel challenges as reasons for discontinuing the school’s Division II membership. “The current economic situation that the government of Puerto Rico has been experiencing has forced us to study our financial alternatives,” Lamba wrote. “We have had to make difficult decisions related to where we will place our limited financial resources. At this historic moment, we do not have the financial means to comply with all of the travel requirements that are part of membership responsibilities.” Puerto Rico-Cayey’s decision leaves the NCAA with three schools from Puerto Rico, all of which are Division II members. They are Puerto Rico-Bayamon, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.

OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY JOINS GREAT LAKES INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICSby John PalmerCOLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Dominican University accepted membership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. At a meeting yesterday at the University of Findlay , presidents of the GLIAC schools approved ODU's application for membership, along with Lake Erie College , effective July 1, 2010 . "This is a huge accomplishment for Ohio Dominican University and our athletic program as we continue our journey to full membership status within the NCAA," said Ron Seiffert, ODU Interim President. "We are honored to join such a competitive and elite conference as the GLIAC and we're delighted that Lake Erie College will be joining us. I am particularly grateful for all of the hard work undertaken by our students, coaches, faculty and staff that helped achieve this milestone." more "The addition of these two institutions is the result of a tremendous partnership with the Presidents Council, the GLIAC office, the GLIAC member institutions and our new members," stated Grand Valley State University President and chair of the GLIAC Presidents Council, Dr. Thomas Haas. "This expansion will definitely help us achieve our goals of reducing missed class time for our student-athletes and reducing travel costs, while strengthening our league both academically and athletically." In March 2008 the university applied for membership with the NCAA Division II. ODU joined the NCAA Division II as candidacy members on September 1, 2008 for the 2008-2009 school year. The Division II prescribed timeline for membership is three years. The first two years are spent in candidacy membership, followed by one year of provisional membership. In January 2009, ODU applied for GLIAC membership. ODU has also recently applied for year two candidacy with the NCAA Division II for July 2009. ODU will begin competing in the GLIAC in 2010-2011 and is scheduled for full membership with the NCAA and the GLIAC in the Fall of 2011. "We are very excited about the addition of Lake Erie College and Ohio Dominican as provisional members," stated new GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. "The institutions are an amazing fit within our geographical footprint and with the growth of our conference in the state of Ohio ; we will provided exposure in untapped media markets for the GLIAC. The growth will also help offer access and opportunity for prospective student-athletes throughout the state of Ohio within the region and throughout their respective communities." As an active NCAA Division II member, Ohio Dominican would be the only university in Central Ohio to be NCAA DII . Since 2002, ODU has taken several steps to meet NCAA Division II requirements, including: Expanding our athletic programs, currently offering 14 intercollegiate sports: men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, football, and men's and women's soccer. Improving our sports facilities, including Panther Field, with stadium lighting and additional practice fields, a new training area, weight rooms and athletic offices. ODU constructed a new 82,000-square-foot student center, to open in August, offering new locker room facilities, a fitness center, expanded gymnasium, and new athletic offices. This summer, the university will also expand its baseball and softball facilities.
GLIAC RELEASELake Erie ReleaseDACposted 6-26-09(published June 23, 2009) - Presidents of the Dakota Athletic Conference have decided Minot State University can compete for postseason tournaments and awards while it’s exploring a jump from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Athletic directors had recommended that any school being considered for membership in another league outside the NAIA be required to forfeit its eligibility for titles and awards. DAC Commissioner Lavern Jessen says the league constitution has no language covering that situation. He says Minot State will be a full member for the next two years, or until the school sends a letter announcing it will withdraw from the DAC. The league meeting was Tuesday in Bismarck. The other DAC schools are Dickinson State, Jamestown College, Mayville State and Valley City State in North Dakota and Black Hills State, Dakota State and South Dakota Tech in South Dakota. you may have to sign in on some articles below

DAC athletic directors want Minot State declared ineligible if they continue pursuing NCAA Division II statusDustin Monke, Sports Editor of The Dickinson Presshttp://www.areavoices.com/monke/ While I knew this was being discussed, today I learned from Dickinson State athletic director Roger Ternes that the Dakota Athletic Conference ADs are in the process of drawing up a recommendation to their board of directors (the DAC school's presidents) that Minot State be declared ineligible for DAC championships and awards as long as it is in the process of switching to Division II. This will be presented to the board at a June 23 meeting. This means Minot State can still play their DAC schedule but they wouldn't be able to win the conference, play in the postseason, have players named to all-conference teams or win any kind of conference-affliated award. I'm unclear on whether or not that means they'd also be ineligible for NAIA awards such as the All-American team. I would assume so, but don't take my word for it yet. If that's the case, I can think of a few pretty good Minot State seniors-to-be who would be better off transferring somewhere they can actually be eligible to win something. Anyway, it seems like me and the rest of the ink-stained scabs will be pursuing the Minot State Division II transition until it's over. As also, check here for more on that.
Is There A Quota On D2 Membership(May 28, 2009) - According to a NCAA source close to the subject on future additions to Division 2 "I don't foresee a “moratorium” like DI has going on right now when it comes to DII membership. I think that the schools in DII recognize that we have the room to take in more schools over the foreseeable future. I don’t see the membership committee just adding schools to add schools. You will see the committee be very selective in my opinion over who they extend an invitation to for membership and who they do not over the next couple of years. "
NCAA To Announce D2 Candidates(5-26-09) - The NCAA will be sending out a press release on schools who are looking to explore D2 status on Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
