Start of the Year REMINDER

Ask all conference members to declare their intentions on remaining a member of the conference at the start of each school year.

Each conference member should be encouraged to tell the conference commissioner or president when they are talking with another conference, this as a courtesy for everyone. It is not uncommon for schools to be in full-fledged talks before the conference is notified, it should be a priority to notify your conference before that happens. This will help to avoid issues for everyone.

Future of the Dakota Athletic Conference

DAC Kicks Out 2 Current Members For 2011-2012

(Dickinson, ND) -- On Tuesday, August 3, at a meeting comprised of presidents, athletic directors, and coaches, members of the NAIA-affiliated Dakota Athletic Conference voted to move to plan for a five-team schedule and conference beginning July 1, 2011. This decision effectively speeds up the timeframe recently established with the applications from current DAC members Black Hills State University and the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology being formally accepted to candidacy by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). With BHSU and SDSM&T moving forward with their NCAA application, the five-school schedule would have ordinarily been implemented on July 1, 2012; yesterday's decision essentially serves to move up the scheduling change by one year.

Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University and the current president of the DAC Board of Directors commented, "This is a time of transition for the DAC. The NAIA is a strong association with nearly 300 member colleges and universities, and the five institutions have declared their commitment to the NAIA and look forward to beginning the new schedule. We wish BHSU and SDSM&T well in their future paths, but are also excited to explore a new direction with new possibilities as we focus on the terrific competition and long-term, historic rivalries among our five member schools."

The DAC and its member institutions are affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Dakota State University (SD), Dickinson State University, Jamestown College, Mayville State University, and Valley City State University are the five member institutions who will begin with the new scheduling effective in fall 2011. Coaches and athletic directors will begin the process of planning for the schedules under the new format immediately.

KING AND NORTH GREENVILLE TO JOIN CONFERENCE CAROLINAS

High Point, N.C. - Conference Carolinas announced today that King College and North Greenville University have been accepted for membership in the league. Conference member institutions voted unanimously to accept both schools and expand the league to 13 teams.

"Conference Carolinas enthusiastically welcomes King College and North Greenville University into our league and looks forward to extending our competitive spirit to the Tornado and Crusaders," said Dr. Betsy Fleming, President of the Conference Carolinas Executive Committee and of Converse College. "Both schools share Conference Carolinas' commitment to developing scholar-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the playing field, and we are pleased to strengthen our league through their membership."

King College in Bristol, TN and North Greenville University in Tigerville, SC will become full members of Conference Carolinas for the 2011-12 season. Both schools are NCAA Division II members and already play many Conference Carolinas members. The scheduling of sports participation starting in the fall of 2011 allows sufficient time for scheduling changes and orientation to conference membership responsibilities and requirements. Both schools enter the conference as independent Division II members.

Conference Carolinas is uniquely comprised of private colleges and universities with an emphasis on undergraduate education. Conference member recent national championships include basketball, baseball, men's lacrosse, and individual champions in golf and track and field. Student athletes graduate at a rate higher than general student populations. King College and North Greenville University meet and enhance this conference profile.

Since its inception in 1930, the conference has served numerous (25) colleges in North and South Carolina. King College represents the second college outside those states (Longwood of Farmville, VA) and the first member from Tennessee. The conference name, however, will not change.

"It is not often that a conference which shares equal values for academic and athletic excellence has the opportunity to add members having identical values. Fortunately we were presented that opportunity,” stated Commissioner Alan Patterson. "In today's climate of conference alignment often based on income production, it is refreshing that we were able to expand based on like student-athlete educational experiences."

D2 New Membership Issues

CLICK HERE TO READ - DII Council moves forward with requirements for nontraditional courses
The membership discussion involved new conference member requirements and the potential growth and expansion of Division II overall.

University of the Sciences President Phil Gerbino, speaking on behalf of the Division II Membership Committee, alerted the Council to the possibility of a consistent expansion of Division II membership that could tax the division’s finite resources and affect championships access for existing members.

A total of 17 institutions currently are in various stages of the Division II membership process. The Membership Committee restricts that number to no more than 30 at any one time.

Various presidents noted that Division II membership potentially faces pressure from all directions, with current Division I, Division III and NAIA members possibly choosing to affiliate for different reasons over the next decade.

Currently, there are 22 Division II conferences, and the Membership Committee has informally identified a ceiling of 25. Gerbino noted that the Membership Committee is encouraging expansion of existing conferences but said that the approach is not really a long-term solution. The governance structure does not control the creation of conferences.

To put the division on the road to a plan, the presidents urged a study of membership matters that would (1) seek to achieve greater understanding of current conference discussions regarding membership and possible expansion, (2) identify strategic priorities in this area and (3) consider the ramifications of what expansion does occur.

The presidents encouraged a study that would model various possibilities, such as the budgetary effects of more conferences, more members, or more conferences with more members. Effects on championships access also would be evaluated.

Division II Vice President Mike Racy said the staff, possibly in concert with a consultant, would begin work on the matter immediately. Initially, the information will go to the Long Range Projections Task Force (recently formed to look at a budget framework for the division for the next 10-14 years), the Membership Committee and the Presidents Council for review and action.

The presidents also gave the Membership Committee permission to explore a requirement that prospective Division II members must have a conference invitation in hand before applying.

SURPRISE!

Updated 6-1-10

This is a mild surprise that only 6 first time applicants (including W Va Tech) filed papers to join D2. Sources we had been talking to had indicated that additional schools from California, Tennessee and Oklahoma had hired consultants and had made contact with D2 conferences on future membership.

Speculation is that NAIA schools were concerned about the new amendement that would not allow them to participate in national championships over the membership period, as well as conference tournaments. Faith-based schools had the option of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) to bridge that time period and had talked with those officials.

Other sources said schools who passed on this time period are waiting for the December 1st application period. This will allow them to compete this fall in NAIA events with no sanctions on them, the current NAIA amendment (on NAIA site) mentions the December 1st period, but did not have it outlined for how schools who enter the NCAA membership during this time would be handled during that time period.

Some schools wanted to see what would happen to those who applied under the new membership application and also results of who was accepted. The speculation is that schools were taking seriously the results of last years process when eight schools were denied membership.

Next step will be to see how many of the 12 schools will be accepted, after that the attention will turn to schools applying at the December 1st deadline. The possibility is that between now and July (2011) up to 30 schools could be joining NCAA D2. D2 conferences are also waiting the outcome of who is accepted as expansion talks are going on in several conferences. One NAIA conference the American Mideast Conference (AMC) is still in limbo for the 2011-12 school year depending on the outcome for Malone, Walsh and Ursuline's applications. One AMC member is also looking at changing to a different AMC conference depending on the outcome.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS

from - Dell Robinson, Commissioner, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA D2)
I think it surprising but the December timeline skews the number a bit.

from - Nathan Salant, Commissioner, Gulf South Conference (NCAA D2)
I was not surprised by the low number because in most cases, the move to the NCAA requires the addition of sports to meet the minimums and a need to add more full-time positions to be more like the typical D-II schools in many areas. Given that many NAIA schools are smaller, private institutions, the current economic situation makes this a less attractive time to add expenses when faculty and staff positions are converted from year-round to 10-month, furloughs are instituted and in many cases, outright staff reductions are implemented.

It is also clear that the process is no longer close to "automatic" and that the NCAA has become a lot more demanding in terms of requirements beyond just having enough sports and an interest. This makes sense, too.

The Gulf South Conference is actively seeking two new members for our East Division. We had, and have, candidates, but the economy and other issues have slowed some of those interactions and completely stalled others. This is nothing unusual, and requires patience and continued discussions.

from - Jim Houdeshell, Commissioner, American Mideast Conference (NAIA)
Ursuline College, Malone University, and Walsh University re-applied to NCAA (D.II) from the American Mideast Conference.

The number applying for NCAA is a bit lower than expected. The NCAA setting the December 1 date for review of candidates may have slowed the application process. In addition, the NAIA is making every effort to re-assert its role in intercollegiate athletics.

from - Bob Hogue, PacWest Commissioner (NCAA D2)
Dave, I'll admit I was somewhat surprised that only 12 schools applied by the deadline. This might be due to three factors: 1) The fact that there are two deadlines this year, June 1 and December 1; 2) The new NAIA legislation, and 3) The more challenging NCAA II membership application and readiness process. Schools who are applying have learned that they need to get all their ducks in a row right from the beginning of the candidacy period. This thorough process should make for even stronger members of NCAA Division II in the future. I wish the best of luck to all 12 of the schools who applied.

AD COMMENTS

George S. Sliman, Director of Athletics, Carlow University
With regard to the AMC situation, I think we are at the point where we need to be extremely proactive in shaping our future. At Carlow, although we are still committed to the NAIA, we realize that as one of only two NAIA schools in Pennsylvania, we need to keep an open mind to other options. It may end up being a situation where the NAIA leaves us! It really comes down to what is in the best interest of our student-athletes and how we as an institution can provide them with the best possible intercollegiate athletic experience. One thing that we always consider is the impact that participating in athletics has on their academic goals. We try to minimize travel, particularly during the week and exam periods. As it stands now, our weekday trips involve going to the Canton and Cleveland areas for competition against Walsh, Malone and Ursuline and Notre Dame, about 2 hours away. Our longer trips to the New York schools which are over 4 hours are typically on weekends. So although it is alot of travel, it is still manageable from a missed class and budget perspective.

I was surprised that only 12 schools applied to DII but I think others will take a "wait and see" approach and may apply in December. With respect to the AMC, at least we will know by July if our 3 schools - Walsh, Malone and Ursuline are accepted and then can plan accordingly. The downside from a conference perspective is that with only 12 schools applying, the probability of all 3 being accepted increases. That being said, I truly hope that they are accepted because obviously, they feel that is in the best interest of their students and institutions and that is what intercollegiate athletics is about.

UPDATED - 5-19-10

When Does DII Stop Taking New Members?

Below is a reply from a source about the future number of members in NCAA D2 -

Good question about shutting the door on the process, I think it will be some time before that occurs. The reason I say that is Division II could theoretically sustain a membership of between 330 to 340 members before we would have to consider closing off membership. Right now we sit at about 295 active members so we definitely have room before we hit that ceiling. The reason why we say 330 to 340 is the maximum is due to the fact that having that many members will still allow us to keep our ratio of access to championships at a pretty good level. Right now our ratio is about 15:1 in terms of active schools to championships access and getting up to 330 to 340 would raise it to 17:1 which is where the division feels would be as high as they (the membership) feels comfortable going. That doesn’t even factor in how many DII schools will decide to reclassify to DI when the moratorium is lifted next year. Not sure how many DII schools will make the jump to DI, but it is safe to assume that there will be some.

In the next year there could be 30 new D2 members accepted. The first 10 will most likely happen with the the June 1st (2010) process, December (2010) and June (2011). The big "unknown" will be how many schools will apply for DI membership during the next process after the moratorium.

(6-21-10) - We asked several Sooner Athletic Conference (NAIA) member schools about a recent message board posting that had their schools looking at future D2 Membership. These schools were also mentioned to have been talking with the Gulf South Conference Arkansas schools who are looking at forming a new D2 conference. Several D2 Oklahoma schools are also considering the new conference. The new conference was discussed this past weekend at D2 meetings in Indianapolis.

No D2 For Mount Vernon Nazarene

4-28-10 - With the announcement of a new part-time AD, Mount Vernon Nazarene will not be seeking NCAA D2 status. One of the commitments needed to become D2 is to have a full-time athletic director in place.

Also sources have informed us that Mount Vernon Nazarene may be close to moving to a new NAIA conference and with this announcement that should happen very soon. MVNU is currently a member of the devastated American Mideast Conference which in a statement recently to the Senior Reports reported that one member was talking with another NAIA conference.

New NCAA D2 Members Need A Conference

written by Dave Schmidt - THE SENIOR REPORTS

(3-25-10) - In the next 3 years 30 schools may become new members of NCAA Division 2. All of these schools will need a conference affiliation when they apply to become D2 according to the new membership application. This is something that will cause a school to be accepted or denied admission. This stipulation can also be a positive for a conference looking to expand and solidify it's membership base.

In conversation with East Coast Conference Commissioner Bob Dranoff, it was noted that the ECC is working with consultants through an NCAA Division II Membership Grant focused on exploring membership growth in their region. The ECC does have an interest in a rational expansion that makes sense for its current members. One concept would be to look at institutions from outside its current footprint that may come together as a new division within the existing conference.

CLICK HERE - East Coast Conference- www.eccsports.org

The west coast is a part of the country that would benefit from a larger base of D2 members as well. It will most likely be a plus for schools looking to become D2 members to be associated with a west coast conference or a conference like the ECC who has a smaller number of members (8 presently). Solidifying the base is important, conferences who want to do that will look for schools who want to be admitted to D2 membership.

Just got a confirmation email from Ursuline AD Cindy McKnight that they will be trying the D2 membership process again... to date 3 of the 4 AMC members who where not accepted last year said that they will seek D2 membership... Malone and Walsh have also indicated they will apply again...Mount Vernon Nazarene has not made an official announcement to date.

New D1 Standards From New Members

The Division I Board of Directors endorsed the recommendations for new Division I membership standards. The recommendations include:

A four-year reclassification process with election to active membership in the fifth year.

Institutions must be active members of Division II for at least five years before beginning the reclassification process to become a Division I institution.

Reclassifying institutions must meet Division I requirements upon beginning the process to become Division I members.

An application fee (the amount to be determined by either the estimated annual average value of direct benefits through distributions and championships or the median annual value of direct benefits through distributions and championships).

All potential Division I members must have a bona fide offer of membership in a Division I conference before beginning the reclassification process.

The recommendations will be drafted as legislative proposals, and the Board will introduce them into the 2010-11 legislative cycle. New standards should be in place when the moratorium on new Division I members expires in August 2011.

added 9-30-09

This a tremendous loss for the GCAC. I personally understand why they chose the SSAC. Several of those schools were charter members of GCAC like my school, Tougaloo College,MS. We spent a lot of time, human resourses along with finances putting the GCAC together. I knew this time was coming, but I did not really think it was this close. We were invited to SSAC for membership. Due to the number of Sports being offered,Tougaloo College finacially could not add seven more sports to its athletics program. The GCAC will meet in N.O.LA, Oct.5th and 6th. I do not know the future of GCAC. Hopefully, we can add more schools to fill that void left by former Conference members.I have made contact with several schools.

St. Thomas University No Longer In The D2 Process

updated 2-16-10

Statement from Laura Courtley-Todd Director of Athletics St. Thomas University
We stopped out of the process because we did not have a viable conference option at the time. A conference affiliation was a big deal to us due to our southern location in Florida, and being an independent was not the best option for the “balance” of a student-athlete. We enjoyed the experience of the NCAA DII process and have hopes again one day to re-enter with a solid conference affiliation.

updated 2-15-10

We again have an email into the officials at St. Thomas about this issue. We had an earlier reply from October saying the school was still waiting to release that information. There seemed to be some confusion from school officials about the information below concerning D2 status statement. According to several sources St. Thomas was concerned about not being able to find a D2 conference that would accept them. They wanted to delay the D2 process until that was settled, instead the D2 released them from provisonal status.

Should St. Thomas decide to move forward with D2 they would have to re-apply and go through the same process as any new school looking to move in that direction.

We hope to have information shortly on this issue.

St. Thomas University Withdraws From NCAA D2 Membership Process

The NCAA sent a letter to St. Thomas (Fla) University yesterday indicating that the membership committee has agreed, per St. Thomas’ request, to remove them from the DII membership process. Should they want back into the D2 membership process they will have to apply all over again, be accepted again and start from the beginning of the process.

St. Thomas is currently a member of the NAIA's Sun Conference.

The Senior Reports is waiting for a statement from St. Thomas and will post when we receive it.

NAIA Passes Amendments
4-12-10

INTENT: To place NAIA postseason restrictions on NCAA applicants beginning with the second academic year after the institution makes application for NCAA membership. PASSED

NAIA's WHAC Open To Expansion

(1-19-10) - Recently The Senior Reports sent Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Confernce Commissioner Andy Jugan the following questions -

Can you verify or deny that the WHAC is looking at expanding in the future? We have sources who say that Marygrove and Rochester are candidates. Also, would you consider adding Lourdes?

The below is his email reply to us -

The WHAC as a conference is always open to accepting new members that are a good "fit" for us academically and athletically. I will confirn that we have had conversations with both Marygrove and Rochester College and received letters from both of their respective presidents expressing their interest in being considered for WHAC membership. We are doing our due dilligence with regard to finding out more about what these institutions can bring ot the WHAC and at the same time sharing with them the potential benefits of being affiliated with our conference and the schools who are already WHAC members.

I have also had informal conversations with representatives of Lourdes College regarding membership in the NAIA and the WHAC.

With the recent addition of University of Northwest Ohio for 2010-2011, WHAC membership now stands at nine institutions, which creates some scheduling challenges. Returning to an even number and possibly twelve schools, in order to attain two automatic qualifying beths to nationals does have some appeal and advantages for us, if we find schools that are the right fit for us. We are not interested in bringing in schools that will not contribute to the reputation and quality of our conference.

Thanks to Commissioner Jugan for his answers to our questions. It looks like the WHAC has taken a positive approach to the expansion of their conference, especially with the many changes taking in other conferences.

UNOH ACCEPTED INTO WOLVERINE-HOOSIER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The University of Northwestern Ohio has been granted full membership into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) beginning with the 2010-11 academic year. The announcement was made by the WHAC Council of Presidents following their voting process.

“To be accepted into a conference of educational institutions with the quality of academics, facilities and athletics that the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has, the University of Northwestern Ohio is elated to be included,” stated President Dr. Jarvis. “We look forward to being a partner with the other member institutions of the WHAC and the future that we will all build together. “

UNOH, located in Lima, Ohio, resumed athletics in 2007-08 as a four-year program after previously competing at the junior college level. The Racers joined the NAIA and were part of the American Mideast Conference as an associate member during the 2007-08 inaugural seasons. The Racers became full members of the AMC before the 2008-09 season. They will compete in the AMC one final year in 2009-10 before joining the WHAC.

"We feel the movement to the WHAC will enhance our ability in becoming a stable, prominent, and forthcoming NAIA institution due to its strong history along with enabling us to maximize our geographical presence in the tri-state area,” stated UNOH athletic director Chris Adams. “We were thrilled when we received the news that the WHAC had accepted our bid.”

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference currently consists of 8 universities. With UNOH joining the WHAC, the league members will total 9 universities. Current members include seven Michigan schools and one in Indiana. Aquinas College, Cornerstone University, and Davenport University are all located in Grand Rapids, MI. Concordia University is located in Ann Arbor, MI and University of Michigan-Dearborn is located in Dearborn, MI. Madonna University is located in Livonia, MI and Siena Heights is in Adrian, MI. The lone Indiana school and closest opponent for UNOH is Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, IN.

The Racers currently field men’s programs in basketball, golf, and tennis. They have women’s teams in those same three sports as well as volleyball. The Racers Inaugural Season of Baseball will begin with play in the WHAC in 2010-11.

SUNY-ESF Joins National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics

NAIA COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS APPROVE FOUR NEW MEMBERS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Council of Presidents (COP) met in Kansas City last week and approved membership applications from Benedictine University at Springfield (Ill.), Central Baptist (Ark.) College, Warren Wilson (N.C.) College and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. These institutions bring total NAIA membership to 290.

”The NAIA welcomes these four institutions and looks forward to working with campus leaders to advance character-driven intercollegiate athletics,” said John Leavens, NAIA Senior Vice President for Membership Services. “I am confident these new members share in the long-held mission of the NAIA to promote the education and development of well-rounded students and productive citizens through intercollegiate athletics.”

NAIA national office staff works closely with member conferences to identify prospective members. NAIA conferences are highly involved throughout the evaluation process to ensure a good fit for prospective institutions at both the conference and national levels. The NAIA will continue to work with each conference to identify prospective schools for NAIA membership.

These institutions join an Association that was founded in 1937, and is a leader in the development of student-athletes. The NAIA continues to be a pioneer in implementing exceptional standards for academics, diversity and character. Those standards are evident not only on the campuses of member institutions, but also in the competitive arena.

The Association provides exclusive opportunities for more than 45,000 young men and women to achieve academically while competing for the love of the game. NAIA member institutions award millions of dollars through athletic aid to eligible student-athletes and create an environment where competitive athletics, academic excellence and character walk hand-in-hand.

About the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Founded in 1911 to “help in the solution of forestry problems” the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry was founded in partnership with Syracuse University. From the early years of its existence, college leaders saw the need to respond to the broader, rather than more specific, needs of environmental professionalism. Over the years, programs were added in design, engineering and life sciences, as well as natural resources management. As SUNY-ESF heads towards its 100th anniversary, the College is at the forefront of developing the technologies to create a sustainable future.

The mission of SUNY-ESF is to advance knowledge and skills and to promote the leadership necessary for the stewardship of both the natural and designed environments. SUNY-ESF today offers 22 undergraduate and 30 graduate degree programs, including eight doctoral programs, and is ranked among the nation’s finest universities.

The intercollegiate athletics program at SUNY-ESF traces its roots back to 1912, when students organized a Forestry Club on campus that has sponsored an intercollegiate timber sports competition every year since. SUNY-ESF has since added to its sports offerings and will move its men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer teams and men’s and women’s cross country teams to full intercollegiate varsity status for 2010 competition.

IWU entertains idea of adding football to program

School also interested in moving to Division II

by Chuck Landis - Marion (Indiana) Chronicle-Tribune
Sunday, September 6, 2009 - Indiana Wesleyan University President Henry Smith endorsed a feasibility study for starting a football program and move to NCAA Division II in public comments to staff and faculty Wednesday afternoon.

However, two IWU officials said Friday afternoon Smith’s comments are just the first step in a long evolving process. Football and Division II have been discussion topics for years, and they will probably remain just talk for at least another year.

“People have been talking about affiliation and additional sports since before I became AD,” said Mark DeMichael, IWU’s second-year athletic director.

“I could see that happening at some point with our growth,” DeMichael added. “But there’s been no progress in putting a study together because we’ve had other priorities like putting together a bid to get the NAIA national track championships.”

Todd Voss, IWU executive vice president, likely would head any committee that investigates football and Division II. But Voss said Friday he is committed to working on other school projects for the 2009-10 school year and won’t have the time to form a study group.

“I would first want to look at the NAIA question,” Voss said. “There has been conversation where the NCAA may add a Division IV and then where would NAIA fall in should that happen.

“If we moved up to Division II, we would want to know if it creates opportunities for our school and athletes,” Voss said.

DeMichael and Voss said there are many issues to resolve before bringing football or moving up to NCAA II. Foremost would be funding for the football program and construction of a stadium. Other expenses will incur such as additional transportation costs and the hiring of new and additional coaches and athletic personnel.

“The bottom line is, not a lot has changed,” Voss said. “We have not started a committee yet, but the conversation has been going on for years.”

Voss said Smith’s apparent endorsement for bringing football to IWU is a change from past administrations.

“Our past presidents didn’t think (football) was a good investment for the university, and Dr. Smith thinks it would be good for the community,” Voss said.

Some interpreted Smith’s comments that football was already coming to IWU and DeMicheal said he spent much of the week addressing the subject. But DeMichael said the president has sent a message that school officials can proceed to the next stage.

“What it does is give us a more definitive idea that (a study) will happen at some point,” DeMichael said. “In the past, there’s never been anybody in the cabinet say that we needed to do this; it had been pure talk and speculation.

“Now, the president said says we’ll be doing an actual study at some point, and probably in the near future than the far future.”

Smith made his comments as part of his overall vision for the university during the next four years.

University of Puerto Rico, Cayey WithdrawS From D2

(July 9, 2009) The University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, has notified the NCAA that it is withdrawing its membership.

The Division II Membership Committee acknowledged the decision at its meeting Thursday in Indianapolis.

University Chancellor Ram S. Lamba in a letter to NCAA President Myles Brand cited financial concerns and travel challenges as reasons for discontinuing the school’s Division II membership.

“The current economic situation that the government of Puerto Rico has been experiencing has forced us to study our financial alternatives,” Lamba wrote. “We have had to make difficult decisions related to where we will place our limited financial resources. At this historic moment, we do not have the financial means to comply with all of the travel requirements that are part of membership responsibilities.”

Puerto Rico-Cayey’s decision leaves the NCAA with three schools from Puerto Rico, all of which are Division II members. They are Puerto Rico-Bayamon, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.

OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY JOINS GREAT LAKES INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

by John Palmer

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Dominican University accepted membership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. At a meeting yesterday at the University of Findlay , presidents of the GLIAC schools approved ODU's application for membership, along with Lake Erie College , effective July 1, 2010 .

"This is a huge accomplishment for Ohio Dominican University and our athletic program as we continue our journey to full membership status within the NCAA," said Ron Seiffert, ODU Interim President. "We are honored to join such a competitive and elite conference as the GLIAC and we're delighted that Lake Erie College will be joining us. I am particularly grateful for all of the hard work undertaken by our students, coaches, faculty and staff that helped achieve this milestone." more

"The addition of these two institutions is the result of a tremendous partnership with the Presidents Council, the GLIAC office, the GLIAC member institutions and our new members," stated Grand Valley State University President and chair of the GLIAC Presidents Council, Dr. Thomas Haas. "This expansion will definitely help us achieve our goals of reducing missed class time for our student-athletes and reducing travel costs, while strengthening our league both academically and athletically."

In March 2008 the university applied for membership with the NCAA Division II. ODU joined the NCAA Division II as candidacy members on September 1, 2008 for the 2008-2009 school year. The Division II prescribed timeline for membership is three years. The first two years are spent in candidacy membership, followed by one year of provisional membership. In January 2009, ODU applied for GLIAC membership. ODU has also recently applied for year two candidacy with the NCAA Division II for July 2009. ODU will begin competing in the GLIAC in 2010-2011 and is scheduled for full membership with the NCAA and the GLIAC in the Fall of 2011.

"We are very excited about the addition of Lake Erie College and Ohio Dominican as provisional members," stated new GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. "The institutions are an amazing fit within our geographical footprint and with the growth of our conference in the state of Ohio ; we will provided exposure in untapped media markets for the GLIAC. The growth will also help offer access and opportunity for prospective student-athletes throughout the state of Ohio within the region and throughout their respective communities."

As an active NCAA Division II member, Ohio Dominican would be the only university in Central Ohio to be NCAA DII . Since 2002, ODU has taken several steps to meet NCAA Division II requirements, including:

Expanding our athletic programs, currently offering 14 intercollegiate sports: men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, football, and men's and women's soccer.

Improving our sports facilities, including Panther Field, with stadium lighting and additional practice fields, a new training area, weight rooms and athletic offices. ODU constructed a new 82,000-square-foot student center, to open in August, offering new locker room facilities, a fitness center, expanded gymnasium, and new athletic offices. This summer, the university will also expand its baseball and softball facilities.

DAC

posted 6-26-09

(published June 23, 2009) - Presidents of the Dakota Athletic Conference have decided Minot State University can compete for postseason tournaments and awards while it’s exploring a jump from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.

Athletic directors had recommended that any school being considered for membership in another league outside the NAIA be required to forfeit its eligibility for titles and awards.

DAC Commissioner Lavern Jessen says the league constitution has no language covering that situation.

He says Minot State will be a full member for the next two years, or until the school sends a letter announcing it will withdraw from the DAC.

The league meeting was Tuesday in Bismarck. The other DAC schools are Dickinson State, Jamestown College, Mayville State and Valley City State in North Dakota and Black Hills State, Dakota State and South Dakota Tech in South Dakota.

DAC athletic directors want Minot State declared ineligible if they continue pursuing NCAA Division II status

Dustin Monke, Sports Editor of The Dickinson Press

http://www.areavoices.com/monke/

While I knew this was being discussed, today I learned from Dickinson State athletic director Roger Ternes that the Dakota Athletic Conference ADs are in the process of drawing up a recommendation to their board of directors (the DAC school's presidents) that Minot State be declared ineligible for DAC championships and awards as long as it is in the process of switching to Division II.

This will be presented to the board at a June 23 meeting.

This means Minot State can still play their DAC schedule but they wouldn't be able to win the conference, play in the postseason, have players named to all-conference teams or win any kind of conference-affliated award. I'm unclear on whether or not that means they'd also be ineligible for NAIA awards such as the All-American team. I would assume so, but don't take my word for it yet.

If that's the case, I can think of a few pretty good Minot State seniors-to-be who would be better off transferring somewhere they can actually be eligible to win something.

Anyway, it seems like me and the rest of the ink-stained scabs will be pursuing the Minot State Division II transition until it's over. As also, check here for more on that.

Is There A Quota On D2 Membership

(May 28, 2009) - According to a NCAA source close to the subject on future additions to Division 2 "I don't foresee a “moratorium” like DI has going on right now when it comes to DII membership. I think that the schools in DII recognize that we have the room to take in more schools over the foreseeable future. I don’t see the membership committee just adding schools to add schools. You will see the committee be very selective in my opinion over who they extend an invitation to for membership and who they do not over the next couple of years. "

NCAA To Announce D2 Candidates

(5-26-09) - The NCAA will be sending out a press release on schools who are looking to explore D2 status on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. As soon as we have that information we will post.
