Start of the Year REMINDERAsk all conference members to declare their intentions on remaining a member of the conference at the start of each school year. Each conference member should be encouraged to tell the conference commissioner or president when they are talking with another conference, this as a courtesy for everyone. It is not uncommon for schools to be in full-fledged talks before the conference is notified, it should be a priority to notify your conference before that happens. This will help to avoid issues for everyone.

Construction of a new, substantially larger building on a footprint that includes the current gymnasium structure will provide needed space for a growth, and will also include a modern gymnasium and dramatically enhanced athletic facilities that will allow the College to return to an intercollegiate athletics program when construction is completed. In the interim, the College plans to significantly expand its intramural and recreational offerings for students. Dr. Marcela Armoza, vice president for enrollment and student affairs, described plans for the expanded program. “Starting this fall, the college will be able to offer sports tournaments, an expanded martial arts program, kick boxing, aerobics, body sculpting, fitness training, yoga, handball and much more. We will have something for everyone.” The College expects to return to intercollegiate athletics, and to NCAA Division III competition, when new facilities are available. Dr. Russell Hotzler, president of the college, recognizes the contribution of intercollegiate athletics to the life of a college. He recently wrote, in a message to student athletes, “From our first days we knew that the lessons learned in collegiate athletics lead to success, not just as students but in the careers that follow. Teamwork, high aspirations, and effort that surpasses what you think you can do, all help you to reach your full potential.”

UNO official response to The Senior ReportsThe UNO athletic department is currently in the midst of an extensive analysis and budget exercise, which was announced in October at the regularly-scheduled LSU Board of Supervisors meeting. This process is very similar to what is occurring on campus amongst the different academic units and is without question, the most thorough review of the University's athletic department in school history. The need for this analysis was brought about by several factors, including the current enrollment on campus and the expectations that the number of students at UNO will continue to decline. The University has been in touch with the NCAA, NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and a host of other resources associated with intercollegiate athletics throughout the process. These entities have provided answers to questions covering topics such as sport sponsorship, compliance, conference affiliation, facilities, budgets and departmental infrastructure. Upon the completion of this process, the athletic department will meet with its different internal and external constituencies before a final presentation with the LSU Board of Supervisors.

University of New Orleans Approved For D3NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans was informed Tuesday that it has been approved to begin its multi-year reclassification process to NCAA Division III.The Division III Management Council, which makes the final decision on provisional and reclassifying members, supported the recommendations made in June by the Division III Membership Committee. They include: The institution will adhere to its plan provided in the application to ensure that it is meeting all sport sponsorship requirements prior to the 2011-12 academic year. Schools with enrollments of over 1,000 students have a Division III sport sponsorship minimum of 12 sports - six men's and six women's. The institution will work closely with a mentor institution. UNO plans to add three sports in time for the 2011-12 academic year, and expects to make an announcement in the fall about which new teams it will field. "We have received a lot of positive feedback from the community each time the possibility of adding football, women's golf and women's soccer at UNO comes up in conversation," said interim athletic director Amy Champion. "Adding sports is always an exciting process and one that our campus has embraced." In 2010-11, the University will sponsor teams in nine sports, of which five are men's and four are women's. These teams will compete as an NCAA Division I Independent Transitioning to Division III. UNO last competed as NCAA Division I Independent in 1975-76 and again from 1980-1987. Additionally, UNO has established a partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas, which will serve as a mentor during the reclassification process. Founded in 1961, UT-Dallas is a public research institution with an undergraduate enrollment of more than 9,800 students that competes in the American Southwest Conference. The ASC is a Division III conference that includes members in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. "It is our pleasure to work in collaboration with everyone at the University of New Orleans in their pursuit of transitioning from Division I to Division III," said UT-Dallas athletic director Chris Gage. "We feel that part of our collegiality is to assist and nurture institutions as best we can in such endeavors; it strengthens the division as well as the industry to welcome like institutions into our organizations." The two institutions have already started working together as UNO navigates through the process to full Division III membership. "I have had the opportunity to meet with Amy (Champion) and see the extensive and well planned course of action for adding sports, facilities and the complex transition from Division I to Division III," said Gage. "I firmly believe this comprehensive agenda addresses the immediate and long range goals, the passion and purpose for making the move will be achieved." Division III is the largest division in the NCAA, consisting of 432 member institutions and roughly 20 more that are currently involved in the process of becoming full members. UNO is committed to the Division III approach of combining academics, competitive sports and an opportunity for student-athletes to pursue a broad range of interests.

Shhhhhhh...it's a secret on D3 ApplicantsWhat schools have applied for D3? That's a good question, we are in touch with the NCAA. The problem, D3 likes to keep these applications a secret, so far it's working...we are hoping they will give us at least the number of schools that applied before the May 15 deadline. Do you know any schools looking to go D3?Email us at - daveschmidt@bright.net UPDATED 6-25-10 from NCAA article on D3 Membership The (Membership) committee also considered applications from several schools asking to begin the Division III membership process and made recommendations that the Management Council will consider at its July 19-20 meeting.
EDITOR'S NOTE -6-25-10After numerous attempts to find out the number of schools applying for D3 from the NCAA, the above is the only indication we have that schools have applied. We will continue to look for information on school's that have applied. We put together a chart that might help you understand the NCAA article that mentioned "several" schools had applied:
